Construction Causes Parking Crunch
Is there a good and legal place to park?
Avery Cummings
Issue date: 3/19/08 Section: News
The campus parking situation is forcing some students to park in unauthorized places increasing the number of parking citations.
The student body is growing and so is the demand for more parking spaces. Currently the decommissioning of the parking lot beside R Building has reduced the number of parking spaces on campus. The old parking lot will become a park with walkways, benches and a bell tower. New parking is planned for the campus property east of DeBuys Road.
Danny Garner, Chief of Security for the campus, provided insights about the parking dilemma.
"When someone is issued a ticket," Garner explains, "campus security is just enforcing the rules ... we still have to enforce the parking rules, otherwise we have a lot of traffic problems... people parking in the roadways, if one person parks on the roadway, then the next person is going to park in the same spot next to them, and then we have ourselves a traffic problem."
Garner also explains that inappropriate parking prevents policemen, firemen and paramedics from reaching their destination. "Emergency vehicles could not get through in parts of the parking lot, which could cause a very bad problem."
On the question of how a student avoids getting a ticket, Garner claims that by arriving early a student can look for a place to park. "...If they would take a few minutes to get here early, and maybe look around for some parking..."
If the parking lots are full, what is the alternative? Garner replies: "The overflow parking lot is the west parking lot of the school. It's just west of the concrete parking lot. It is a grassy area, but there is a notification that it's for overflow parking."
On the other side of DeBuys Road, there are a couple of spots that students use for paking. Is that legal? Garner responds, "We're not enforcing those at this time. If people park over there, they can park there as far as I'm concerned, but we're not enforcing that at this time."
The reasons a student will receive a ticket range from improper parking, parking on the grass, unlawful parking in a handicap spot and parking without a parking permit.
